Build Playbook

Quickstart Guide

This guide is designed for people who already understand Enterprise Social Networks, and need to start a Yammer group quickly. This guide condenses information on the BUILD website, and helps you to prepare your 30-day and/or 90-day plans.

Important work happens *before* you create your group!

  • Be prepared, as Community Manager, to dedicate up to five hours per week for planning and execution of priorities.
  • Have a rationale for the community, including expected benefits and outcomes.
  • Choose your group type based on its purpose: Thematic, Functional/Organizational, Internal Customer Care, Community of Practice, Community of Interest, or Event/Response/Initiative.
  • Search Yammer to find out if your group concept already exists. Contact related groups.
  • Connect with the Learning and Knowledge Management group for direction and input.
  • Consider how this group fits into UNICEF’s information ecosystem. Will you need any other platforms, such as SharePoint sites or a place on ICON?
  • What is your vision of success? Set initial goals and metrics.
  • Confirm your group’s title, subtitle, description (INFO), and related sites and links.
  • Obtain participation commitments from interested UNICEF leaders.
  • Determine who at UNICEF fill key roles: Members, Leaders, Sponsors, and Champions.

Is everything in “Before You Begin” thought through and complete? If yes, refer to UNICEF’s unique BUILD model. BUILD is UNICEF’s approach to creating collaborative communities, where staff can share knowledge, ideas, and good practices, across 190 countries and territories by using modern digital social platforms.

  • Review and learn how to use the  BUILD model to optimize interaction, learning and knowledge exchange in your group.
  • Determine key strategies for adoption and engagement.
  • Complete and follow the 30-day and/or 90-day plans; include communications planning.
  • Reach out to Sponsors, Leaders, and Champions; review the plan and explain what is expected. Reach out to some early members and invite them to join.
  • Begin a list of posts that you can use during your first 30 days.
  • Prepare to track metrics with SWOOP Analytics.
  • Download and install the Yammer mobile app and learn your way around.

This 30-day Plan is a sample plan and timeline to start or reboot your UNICEF community.

  • Increase membership
  • Engage current members
  • Address a change in the community, organization, or context

This plan is designed as a structured and iterative activity calendar that will keep your group interacting until it finds its own unique cadence and dialog frequency. Use the template of ideas to find what works for you. Next, you can complete a 90-day plan with ease.

This plan focuses on the four roles that will be part of your community:

  • Community Leader (formally in charge of the group)
  • Members (colleagues and partners who join your group)
  • Champions (passionate members who are informal leaders and influencers at UNICEF, and who commit to making your community a success).
  • Sponsors (leaders who use their position at UNICEF to ensure success)

Successful online communities use 90-day plans, adapted by each Community Leader as needed. A 90-day plan ensures your community activities align with specific short- and long-term objectives.

The 90-day plan is a template of recommended tasks and activities to perform each weekday for three months. The plan includes campaigns suggestions and tactics that will drive engagement of your members.

The easiest and fastest part of the process: Use the plus symbol next to UNICEF GROUPS on any Yammer page to get started. If you plan to include members from outside UNICEF, choose “external group.” Add your group’s name and description. Ensure that the description, avatar/visual and pinned posts are up-to-date. Create a public group, unless some confidentiality is needed.

Time to use your Communications Plan. Decide if you want to launch with a big splash – at an event or on an auspicious date – or if you prefer a “soft launch” with a few members, to get started and grow gradually.

Either way, invite and add members.

  • Announce your new community to all interested audience(s).
  • Advertise the community to other groups.
  • Consider writing and submitting an ICON story.
  • Post a notice in the All-Company group.

Immediately refer to your 30-day Plan and 90-day Plan, so your group does not lose momentum.

You are now a successful Community Leader — Congratulations!

And continue to follow your plan!
